The camera comes out first and it decides everything after. The plumber runs the lateral from the cleanout to the connection, notes distance and depth at any defect, and marks it on the surface so a repair can be aimed. South Carolina produces a few recurring findings. In the older textile towns of the Upstate the drain and lateral pipe is often cast iron or clay, both of which fail at the joints, and both of which mature roots find. Nearer the coast the problem is more often movement. Pipe laid in soft marsh influenced ground, or in fill over it, settles unevenly, and a section that has dropped an inch holds waste and grows a blockage every time. That is called a belly, and no amount of cleaning fixes it, because the pipe's shape is the problem. Once the defect is known the choice is between a spot repair, a full open cut replacement, and a trenchless option that lines or replaces the pipe with pits at each end. Trees, driveways, depth and how many bends the run has all weigh on that decision, and the homeowner should hear the trade offs plainly.

A low section where the pipe has lost its fall and holds standing water. Solids settle in that dip instead of moving on, and the line blocks there repeatedly. It usually comes from settlement in soft or poorly compacted ground, which is common where pipe was laid in fill near the coast.
Lining works when there is still a pipe to line. A cracked or root damaged run with its shape intact is a good candidate. A section that has collapsed, or one with a serious belly, needs the shape corrected first, since a liner follows the host pipe and would preserve the same low spot.
Typically at the connection to the public main, with the lateral in between belonging to the property. Municipalities differ on this, and some draw the line at the property boundary instead, so check with your water and sewer provider before scheduling work near the street.
Not usually all of it. Open cut work follows the pipe and disturbs a strip rather than the whole lawn, and trenchless methods only need access at two points. Where an old live oak sits over the run, that tree is often the reason a trenchless approach is chosen even when it costs more up front.
