What a pro does

The layout of the house tells a plumber where to start, and along the South Carolina coast that layout is unusual. Raised pier homes on Edisto, Pawleys Island and up the Waccamaw put the whole drain system under the floor instead of in the ground, which means long horizontal runs hung from joists with only as much fall as the builder gave them. Not much fall is common, and it doesn't take long to show. A branch that drops a quarter inch per foot carries a load fine; one that was hung level in a remodel holds water and grease at the low point until nothing gets by. So the plumber gets under the house and reads the pipe before touching a machine. Where the fall is right, cabling from a cleanout clears the stoppage and the line stays open. Where a run sags between hangers, cleaning is temporary and the honest recommendation is to re support it. Inside, the small stuff still matters: a lavatory choked with hair at the stopper, a kitchen trap packed hard with grease, a laundry standpipe full of lint.

Because the drain lines are visible and reachable, which helps, but they are also hung rather than bedded in ground. Hangers loosen, a remodel adds a fixture on a long lazy run, and any low spot in that pipe becomes the place solids collect. On a slab home the same pipe is buried and holds its grade.
It moves the problem down the line rather than solving it. Ground food that goes into a drain with grease behind it settles in the first slow section, and in a house with a long under floor run to the main that section is usually well away from the sink. Scraping plates into the trash puts less through the pipe.
It goes down liquid and cools solid within a few feet of pipe. Humid Lowcountry crawlspaces stay warm enough that people assume it keeps moving, but the water leaving the sink cools quickly and the fat comes out of it. Grease is the single most common cause of a kitchen line that has to be cleaned repeatedly.
By whether it comes back. A plumber can clear either, but a line that blocks again within a few weeks is telling you something about its slope, its diameter or its condition. A camera answers that question, and it turns a series of service calls into one repair.
