Ice tends to damage a run in more than one place, so the pipe gets checked well past the obvious split before anything is rejoined. After the repair the system comes back up under low pressure first, then full, with the fixtures opened to bleed air. Outside spigots and irrigation backflow devices get looked at last, since those crack quietly and only show it in April.

In a climate where hard freezes come a few nights a year, insulation around plumbing is thin or absent, and lines run through spaces that stay near outdoor temperature. A short, sharp freeze on an unprotected pipe does the same damage a long northern winter would.

Towns near the Blue Ridge escarpment like Walhalla, Landrum and Long Creek sit higher and get more freezing nights than Beaufort or Walterboro do, and pipes there see repeated cycles rather than one event. Coastal homes still burst, they just do it less often and with less warning.
It is the most common freeze failure in the state. A hose left connected traps water in the bib, and when that freezes the split usually happens inside the wall behind it rather than at the visible end. The leak then appears the first warm day somebody turns the water on for the yard.
It varies by policy and by the circumstances of the loss, and carriers treat it differently depending on whether the home was occupied and heated. Contact your insurance provider before repairs go far, and photograph the failed pipe and the wet area first.
